Green Alternatives

Finding green alternative cleaning products has become increasingly popular, but with so many products to choose from, it can be confusing to discover which products are truly green and which are jumping the bandwagon. Going green doesn’t only mean that you’re benefitting the environment, you can also be benefitting your health.

When wanting to promote a green environment, many opt for kitchen products, such as baking powder and lemon juice, to avoid using harmful chemicals.  However, you don’t have to hunt around your cupboards to find these ingredients and create the cleaning mixture - instead, you can simply open your cleaning cupboard and find all that’s required right under your nose.

GREEN TIP:
When buying environmentally friendly products ensure phosphates, chlorine, artificial fragrances and colours are not present on the ingredients list.  Many products promote themselves as green due to the fact they are biodegradable, use recycled packaging or donate to environmental organisations; however, many of still use harmful ingredients.

HEALTH BENEFITS

If you have asthma or other breathing difficulties, traditional cleaning products can leave you feeling breathless or with a persistent tickle in your throat, especially when using some aerosol cleaning sprays.

The American Thoracic Society's American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine reported: "Researchers found that cleaning sprays, especially air fresheners, furniture cleaners and glass-cleaners, had a particularly strong effect [in creating asthma symptoms].

"Frequent use of household cleaning sprays may be an important risk factor for adult asthma ...  The relative risk rates of developing adult asthma in relation to exposure to cleaning products could account for as much as 15 per cent, or one in seven, of adult asthma cases."

Green spray cans are now using carbon dioxide as an alternative to aliphatic hydrocarbon, which provides many advantages; it is non-flammable, essentially non-toxic and doesn’t fall within the definition of VOC (volatile organic compounds).

There are many other benefits of using green alternative cleaning products, including:

•    Allergies reduced;
•    Less toxic risk;
•    Reduce the impact you have on the environment;
•    Could save money;
•    Avoid exposing your family to harmful toxins and dangerous chemicals.
