A toilet can look clean while still harbouring germs. Effective toilet care means removing dirt and limescale, then using a suitable disinfectant when needed—following its instructions carefully.
Cleaning, descaling and disinfecting do different jobs. Cleaning removes soiling, descaling tackles mineral deposits, and disinfecting kills specified germs when the product is used correctly. A toilet cleaner is not automatically a disinfectant.
What you will need
Protective gloves suitable for the chemicals you are using.
Eye protection where required by the product label or where splashing is possible.
Disposable paper towels or dedicated toilet-cleaning cloths.
A toilet brush or bowl swab.
A suitable toilet cleaner and, where required, a washroom disinfectant.
A compatible descaler if limescale is present.
Before starting: ventilate the room, read the product labels and keep cleaning chemicals away from children and pets. Never mix cleaning products.

Cleaning and disinfection
The following products are described as having disinfecting or antibacterial properties. Check the current label for suitable surfaces, dilution and the contact time required for disinfection.
Apeal Daily Washroom Cleaner — a ready-to-use cleaner described as cleaning, descaling, deodorising and disinfecting. Not suitable for vitreous enamel.
SinkIT Sanitary Cleaner — a neutral, ready-to-use cleaner for cleaning and disinfecting washroom surfaces, including toilet seats.
Q-Eco Toilet Cleaner — an acidic toilet cleaner described as cleaning, descaling, disinfecting and deodorising.

Do not assume that a product kills every type of germ. If you need protection against a particular bacterium or virus, check that the label specifically covers it.
Routine washroom cleaning
These products help remove washroom soiling, scale or odours. Their linked descriptions do not establish a disinfectant claim, so use a separately verified disinfectant when disinfection is required.

Descaling does not replace disinfection. Choose products for the job you need them to perform.
How to clean and disinfect your toilet
1. Prepare the area
Put on suitable gloves and any required eye protection. Remove nearby items that could be splashed.
Check for in-cistern blocks or other toilet treatments before adding chemicals. Do not introduce a product that could react with an existing treatment.
There is no need to disconnect the toilet or routinely turn off its water supply.
2. Clean the outside first
Use a suitable cleaner to remove visible dirt from the flush handle or button, cistern, lid, seat and hinges. Work from cleaner areas towards dirtier areas, finishing with the pedestal and base.
Use fresh paper towels or clean sections of a dedicated cloth as you work. Keep the toilet brush for the bowl only.
3. Clean the bowl
Flush if needed to remove loose soiling. Apply your chosen toilet cleaner under the rim and around the bowl as directed.
Allow the recommended dwell time, then brush thoroughly beneath the rim, around the bowl and at the waterline. Flush or rinse according to the label.
If limescale remains, use a suitable descaler as a separate treatment. Never add it to bleach or another cleaning chemical.
4. Disinfect where needed
Once dirt has been removed, apply a disinfectant suitable for the surface.
Pay particular attention to frequently touched areas such as the flush control, seat and lid. For the bowl, use a product specifically approved for that application.
Keep treated surfaces wet for the full contact time stated on the disinfectant label. There is no single contact time that applies to every product. Do not wipe, rinse or flush it away too soon.
If using a combined cleaner-disinfectant, follow its instructions, including any requirement to remove heavy soiling first.
5. Finish according to the label
After the required contact time, rinse, wipe or allow surfaces to dry as instructed. Rinse the bowl by flushing where directed.
Do not leave products overnight unless the manufacturer specifically recommends it.
6. Clean your equipment
Clean the toilet brush and holder according to their care instructions. Dispose of used paper towels and launder reusable cloths appropriately.
Remove your gloves and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
Important safety tips
Never mix bleach with toilet cleaner, descaler, acids, ammonia or any other cleaning product. Dangerous gases can be released.
Use one product at a time. Follow instructions for removing residues before any separate treatment.
Check compatibility with toilet seats, chrome, stainless steel, enamel, marble and other surfaces.
Select gloves according to the product’s safety instructions; no single glove material suits every chemical.
Do not use specialist hydrochloric-acid products as a routine cleaning shortcut.
Do not unscrew or remove a toilet to clean around its fittings. Leave repairs and removal to a qualified professional.
For workplace cleaning, follow the relevant COSHH assessment and site procedures.
Keeping your toilet hygienic
Clean regularly, paying extra attention to the seat and flush control. Address limescale as it develops and clean promptly after visible contamination.
Disinfection may be needed more frequently when someone is unwell or where a workplace hygiene procedure requires it. Regular cleaning remains the foundation of good toilet hygiene.
