How to Clean Grout and Remove Mould

Dirty grout, black spotting and stubborn limescale can make a bathroom look tired, even when the tiles are regularly cleaned. The best results start with identifying the problem and choosing a cleaner that suits both the deposit and the surface.

This guide explains how to clean everyday grout, treat small patches of surface mould and tackle limescale, with products and brushes available from Click Cleaning.

Before you start: never mix cleaning products. Bleach-based mould removers and acidic descalers or toilet cleaners can release dangerous chlorine gas when combined. Keep products separate, including their residues in cloths, brushes, containers and drains. HSE cleaning guidance

Is It Dirt, Mould or Limescale?

Different deposits need different treatments:

  • General dirt and soap residue: start with a surface-approved neutral tile and grout cleaner.

  • Black spotting in damp areas: may be mould, particularly around shower corners and silicone seals. Colour alone does not confirm the cause.

  • Hard, chalky deposits and water marks: may be limescale. Brown staining can also come from rust or other deposits.

Check the care instructions for your tiles, grout, sealant and nearby fittings. A product suitable for ceramic tiles may still damage the grout between them.

How to Clean Dirty Grout

For ordinary dirt, begin with gentle cleaning rather than a strong descaler.

1. Prepare the area

Ventilate the room, remove toiletries and protect nearby fabrics. Wear the gloves and eye protection specified by your cleaner.

Check that the grout is sound. Newly installed grout must be fully cured, while loose, cracked or crumbling joints need repair.

2. Apply a suitable cleaner

Choose a neutral tile and grout detergent approved for the surface. Follow its dilution and contact-time instructions, and test it on a discreet area first.

Work in small sections and avoid letting the cleaner dry on the surface.

3. Brush gently along the joints

The Blue Grout Brush 225mm has a narrow shape and polyester bristles for cleaning grout lines and awkward edges.

For broader, durable areas, the Grippy Hygiene Scrub Yellow provides a larger scrubbing surface.

Use light pressure and stop if the grout begins to powder or crumble.

4. Rinse and dry

Wipe away the loosened dirt, rinse with fresh water and dry the tiles. Let the joints dry fully before deciding whether another treatment is needed.

Avoid using acidic cleaners as your routine grout cleaner. Repeated acidic cleaning can weaken or discolour cement-based grout. MAPEI grout-care guidance

How to Remove Mould

For small patches on washable bathroom surfaces, choose a mould remover whose label permits use on your particular grout, tiles or silicone.

Ventilate well, protect nearby finishes and follow the product’s protective-equipment instructions. Avoid breathing spray mist or dry-brushing mould.

HG Mould Spray 500ml

HG Mould Spray is a self-acting option for label-approved grout and silicone joints.

HG’s instructions specify:

  1. Spray from a distance of 3–5cm.

  2. Leave for 30 minutes.

  3. Wash off with water and a sponge.

For silicone joints, rinse after 30 minutes before any repeat treatment. The product has a bleaching action, so test first and protect metals, fabrics and sensitive finishes. Do not remove the mould before application where HG’s label instructs otherwise. HG instructions

Drastik Mould and Mildew Remover 750ml

Drastik Mould and Mildew Remover is a professional-use product for approved hard surfaces, including ceramic tiles and grout.

Clover’s product sheet specifies undiluted application from 4–8cm, a five-minute contact time, followed by rinsing with water.

Drastik is corrosive and bleach-based. Use the specified gloves and eye protection, and follow workplace controls where applicable. It must not be used on vitreous enamel or aluminium. Clover product instructions

These products are alternatives. Do not combine them, and do not transfer one product’s dilution or contact time to the other. The current bottle label always takes priority.

How to Remove Limescale

Descalers tackle mineral deposits. They should only be used on grout when the tile, grout and cleaner manufacturers approve that combination.

Avoid acidic descalers on marble, limestone, travertine and other acid-sensitive surfaces. Check restrictions for enamel, metal finishes, sealers and coloured grout.

Descalers for Compatible Bathroom Surfaces

  • Q-Eco Rapid Descaler 750ml: a ready-to-use foaming option for compatible washroom surfaces. Its product sheet specifies up to two minutes before agitation and thorough rinsing. It excludes enamel, marble, limestone and damaged or acid-sensitive surfaces.

  • Delphis Eco Commercial Foaming Descaler 700ml: a clinging spray for compatible taps, sinks and showers. Its information sheet specifies a short contact time of a few seconds before wiping and rinsing.

  • Viakal Limescale Remover 500ml Pourer: a liquid format for compatible hard surfaces. Follow the exact bottle directions and restrictions for stone, metals and enamel.

  • HG Limescale Remover Concentrate 1 litre: a concentrated option for stubborn scale. Select the label dilution for the task, observe the prescribed contact time and rinse thoroughly.

Do not use a common contact time for all descalers. Apply carefully, protect adjacent surfaces and never allow the product to dry unless its instructions expressly permit it.

Commercial Descaling and Toilet Care

The following products have different intended tasks and should not be treated as interchangeable grout cleaners:

Environmental branding does not establish grout compatibility or remove the need to follow safety instructions.

Should You Use a Metal Brush on Grout?

For the methods in this guide, choose polyester bristles.

The Niche Brush with Stainless Steel Bristles is a specialist tool sold for stubborn burnt-on deposits. It is not recommended here for routine grout, glazed tiles, natural stone or silicone, because wire bristles can abrade joints and scratch finishes.

How to Help Prevent Mould Returning

Cleaning removes visible contamination, but persistent moisture needs attention too.

Keep bathroom extraction working effectively, remove excess water from shower surfaces and allow the area to dry. Address leaks promptly and maintain sound grout and sealant.

If silicone is split, detached or stained within its depth, it may need replacement after the moisture problem is resolved. Do not repeatedly scrub damaged joints or cover active mould with paint or sealant.

For extensive or recurring mould, hidden damp or water damage, seek specialist advice. Repeated spraying alone will not resolve the underlying cause. UK Government damp and mould guidance

Always read the current product label and safety information before use, test a discreet area and follow the surface manufacturer’s care instructions.
